Unincorporated for Nearly Fifty Years
Loves Park takes its name from Rockford industrialist Malcolm Love, who bought a 236-acre riverside tract in 1901; the area stayed unincorporated for decades, reportedly the largest unincorporated town in the country, until a referendum passed 808-513 on April 30, 1947, creating a city of about 4,505 residents under Mayor Homer E. Burton.
No Single Building Department Setting the Standard
Housing built during that long unincorporated stretch went up without one building department setting consistent standards for vapor barriers or crawl-space ventilation, so moisture management in those older sections varies block to block.
