Why local history matters
Rockford's housing splits cleanly for this trade. The Victorian and bungalow-era neighborhoods such as Haight Village use plaster, board sheathing and open framing cavities, which move air and moisture between floors -- so a problem found on one level frequently started on another, and containment is harder than the visible damage suggests. The postwar and later subdivisions are tighter and more predictable, concentrating trouble in the basement below and the attic above.
